We had a really amazing time at SXSW, although the best story is the fact that I was still a grad student at UCLA and this was during finals week. So I literally flew in on a redeye late the night before, slept in the airport, snuck into the hotel spa where I took a shower, and then presented only after convincing another team to help me advance my slides. I then went home right after on a train to San Antonio and then cheapest return flight. I really didn't get to enjoy much but I did have phenomenal conversations and met great people.

It was really exciting for our team, getting invited to present at SXSW at HATCH pitch 2013, and to see that teams around the country were chosen. We were really flattered to be able to be there. We were initially a little trepidatious about it. We knew some of the judges could be very tough. We were not sure whether the judges or the audience would understand the niche for the energy space we were in. Fortunately for us, we were able to simplify the message such that we got the point across, so even judges not in this space recognized the significant opportunity.

On March 16th at SXSW Interactive, twelve awesome startups who rose to the top from a pool of hundreds from around the world will compete head-to-head to claim the most in HATCH dollar investments to become this year’s 1st place winner. With over $150M raised by past HATCH pitch winners since 2012 including one acquisition, real world investments are highly likely to follow. These ‘making life better’ startups will present to a panel of world class judges consisting of top VCs, Fortune 100 enterprise executives, and top accelerators.

HATCH pitch was an amazing opportunity for us to not only prepare for a high-pressure pitch so we nailed our key messages, but also to walk away with some actionable feedback and recognition. We were voted audience favorite, and took advantage of the perks offered to finalists including a radio interview and additional media exposure. The best part, though, was making sure we were thinking about the true differentiators in our business and this space considering all the great ideas we were up against.

HATCH pitch is in full swing for its SXSW 2015 event and all applications are now in for the final review. Applicants have given it their best - some even utilizing feedback from HATCH pitch itself, and made their submissions. Eagerly awaiting news with their fingers crossed, applying startups have filled the applicant message board with well wishes to all their fellow applicants and comments of hope and anticipation to meet everyone at SXSW.

Last Thursday night, Jan 22, marked the re-emergence of a great community pastime, the Houston Startup Happy Hour. The evening brought together entrepreneurs and startup community enthusiasts from all over the city to celebrate a great year in H-town startups and an even brighter 2015. It was a night of fun, friends, and new faces encased in the warm, intimate atmosphere of a Midtown pub.

HATCH pitch is in full swing for the SXSW 2015 event and today, Jan 20, is the last day for applications. If you’re a startup and haven’t yet applied, now is the time!
Great things happen here! We have just added judges from two of the top seed VC’s, Intel Capital and Atlas Venture, and we will shortly announce more! The number and the quality of applications we’re receiving is skyrocketing. Take advantage of the time left and finalize your application now.
